Difficult roads… basic hotels… wilderness… heat… this is an area well away from the normal tourist trail. Consequently, this makes for an unforgettable visit, and for an experience that will remain with you for the rest of your life. You will be visiting remote tribes whose customs and traditions remain
intact – including carrying out the odd raid on each other. The National Parks are wild, and visiting this region gives a feeling of finding a real Africa.

Day 1: Arrive Addis Ababa.
Transfer to hotel. City tour including National museum, Ethnological museum and the Holy Trinity Cathederal which is the final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie.
Drive to mount Entoto for a panoramic view of the city. Also visit the Merkato – one of the biggest markets in Africa.

Day 2: Addis Ababa – Awasa. (280 km).
Drive to the Rift Valley lakes Ziway, Abiata – Shala, Langano and Awasa, set amidst dramatic bleay blue mountains and alive with thriving bird-life.

Day 3: Awasa – Chencha – Arba Minch. (300 km).
Early morning visit of Awasa’s lively fish market on the lakeshore, and on to Chencha, high in the Guge Mountains and home of the Dorze, known for their huge beehive huts, often over 10m high. and their cotton togas (shemmas). continue to Arba Minch.

Day 4: Morning visit to the Nechisar National Park. (540 km).
Game includes Burchell’s zebra, greater Kudu, Guenther’s dik-dik, Grant’s gazelle and the endemic Swayne’s hartebeest. The birdlife is plentiful with bustards, hornbills and the endemic Nechisar nightjar amongst others (351 species have been recorded). Afternoon boat trip on the beautiful Lake Chamo for an incredible sight of crocodiles. Hotel.

Day 5: Arba Minch – Konso – Weyto – Jinka. (240 km).
After breakfast drive to Jinka via Konso, whose people are well known for their successful terrace-farming practices, en-route visit such diverse peoples of the Omo Valley such as the Ari (keepers of livestock, honey), Banna (agriculture, hunting), Tsemay (pastoralists). Hotel.

Day 6: Jinka – Mursi –Jinka. (160 km).
Morning visit to Mago National Park, a harsh environment – which gives an unforgettable visitwhere you may see a variety of game such as Dafassa waterbuck, kudu, gerenuk, Burchell’s zebra, topis, Lelwel hartebeest and buffalo. Visit the Mursi, pastoralists who are famous for the stick fighting of the men, and the women who adorn themselves with clay plates inserted in the lower lip. Drive back to Jinka. Hotel.

Day 7: Turmi – Key Afar – Dimeka – Turmi. (150 km).
Drive to Turmi, and its environs, home of  he Hamer people who are masters of body decoration. The Hamer are agropastoralists, cultivating sorghum, millet, cotton, tobacco and vegetables as well as rearing cattle and goats. Around Turmi is where ‘the jumping of the bulls’ ceremony takes place, a rite of passage into manhood for all Hamer and Banna boys involving leaping down a line of bulls, whilst being whipped and teased by the women. Both captivating – and worrying – not part of the itinerary!. Overnight in Lodge.

Day 8: Turmi – Omorate – Turmi. (160 km).
Today we cross the river Omo at Omorate to visit the Dasanech people and return to Turmi. Overnight in Lodge.

Day 9: Turmi – Arbore – Weyto – Konso – Yabelo. (280 km).
Numerous stop overs to see different peoples on the way to Yabelo. Hotel.

Day 10: Yabelo –Yirga Alem. (280 km).
Drive through a region of coffee plantation and interesting villages.

Day 11: Yirga Alem – Addis Ababa. (320 km).
Drive to Addis for the end of a memorable tour. Transfer to airport for the evening flight.

LEVEL
A comfortable tour in the north using air travel and good hotels, with more basic facilities in the south. All hotels are clean and well-appointed – and any shabbiness around the edges can add a certain charm. Roads can be difficult in south and there is less choice of accommodation.

Car or minibus in the north. 4 wheel drive in the south.

Driver/guide with local guides as neccessary.

Accommodation based on twin share. 10 nights hotels/lodges (best available), Hotel on half- board basis. Single travellers need to pay a single supplement.
