Start / end Algiers
The Algerian Sahara is the gem of North African landscapes. The Tassili region is an open-air museum and understandably one of the destinations most coveted by tourists visiting the Southern Sahara.
Using four wheel drive vehicles, Fulani Travel organizes desert tours that take you within the dunes and impressive rock formations of the Tadrart region. You will pass through an ever-changing landscape varying from fantastic volcanic mountains, granite needles, rolling sand dunes, bizarre rock formations, deep canyons, and beautiful green oases.
Day 1: DJANET
Arrival and airport transfer.
Simply landing in Djanet gives a feeling of being somewhere special. This small oasis town is situated on the foot of the Tassili N’Ajjer on the edge of Erg Admer, a vast sea of sand dunes. Djanet has evolved from a classic oasis village with large, shady palmeries giving a peaceful aspect to the town. Daily life follows the slow rhythm of the desert, a rhythm that has adapted to its environment, with most activities taking place in the early morning or in the late afternoon. In the center of the town is a lively market where local people trade their wares. Djanet also has a museum displaying examples of prehistoric relics from the surrounding area.
Day 2: DJANET / ISSOUAD
After some free time to change money, we will set off into the desert late morning. On our way to the Tadrart we will visit a Touareg camp and see the beautiful rock engravings of Tanaout where ancient engravings of cattle and giraffes decorate the rock walls. In the afternoon we will drive through the empty landscape navigating between the low rocky hills.
Day 3: El BIREDJ
El Biredj is a wide canyon-like valley that takes us to the fascinating landscape of the Tadrart. The further into El Biredj we go, the more paintings and engravings we will encounter. We will see wonderfully preserved paintings of cattle, people, and hunting scenes. Like the Tassili N’Ajjer, the Tadrart region is like a magical open-air museum.
Day 4 & 5: TADRART
At the end of El Biredj the high orange colored sand dunes of Moul el Naga appear. The sharpness and shades of the dunes make this a classic desert landscape. The ride over the sand dunes is thrilling and after passing some spectacular wind-sculptured arches we will arrive at the highest dunes of the Tadrart, the Tin Merzouga. From the foot of the dune a huge orange wall towers towards the sky. A climb to the top is not easy, but is well worth the effort! Experiencing the stillness of the air with the sun low in the sky is unforgettable. From Tin Merzouga we will follow Oued In Djared, where we will continue to see numerous rock paintings and engravings.
Day 6: ALIDEMA
The Oued In Djaren takes us from the Tadrart through a vast empty landscape to Alidema, an area of orange sand contrasting with black rock formations.
Day 7: ALIDEMA/ DJANET
We end the tour crossing the route of the famous Berliet expedition of 1960, and we are left with the feeling of having experienced the true heart of the desert. We will arrive in Djanet in the early afternoon and have time to freshen-up before traveling to the airport.
